What is the Difference Between Liposuction and CoolSculpting?

When you start looking for body sculpting options, two of the more prominent options you will see are liposuction and CoolSculpting®. When you see a list of the pros and cons of each treatment option, it can leave you wondering which one is right for you. The more you know about each treatment, the easier it will be for you to make an informed decision.

Liposuction and CoolSculpting® are drastically different treatments. However, they both are designed to minimize the appearance of unwanted fatty deposits around your midsection or on other parts of your body. So both options are designed to produce the same end outcome. What you will have to decide is how you want to go about reaching that outcome.

Liposuction has been around since the 1980’s. There are a number of varieties of liposuction, including treatments that use lasers, ultrasound, and heat to break up the fat before it is removed from the body. Liposuction is a surgical procedure. It is usually performed under local anesthesia, under sedation, or under general anesthesia. The type of anesthesia used will depend on the area that is being treated as well as your health. The incisions used for liposuction are relatively small, usually around one quarter of an inch. There is little to no scarring after liposuction. With liposuction, the fat is sucked out of the body via a cannula. Most people are able to resume their everyday activities quickly after liposuction.

CoolSculpting® on the other hand is a non-surgical treatment. It does not require any form of anesthesia. With CoolSculpting®, the fatty area of the body is slowly cooled down until it reaches a temperature that causes the fat cells in the area to die. The amazing thing about CoolSculpting® is that it is able to cool the fat to the point where it is destroyed but not affect your skin or other tissues.

CoolSculpting® is great if you have smaller fat deposits you want to remove. It is also great for individuals who want to avoid surgery but want to see positive results. Liposuction can produce more dramatic results, but it does require a longer recovery time. With CoolSculpting®, there is no downtime and little to no recovery time.
